October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Earlier in my fundraising career, I had the privilege to work with an NPO (non-profit organization) called the Montreal Breast Cancer Foundation. Today, it is part of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

Our fundraising event in 1996 was a high-profile luncheon in partnership with Revlon Canada. Our special guest and speaker was super-model Claudia Shiffer.  The Luncheon sold out almost immediately, and the event surpassed the fundraising goal!

In addition to working with a group of dynamic and well-connected volunteers, I learned a lot about breast cancer. I was nine years old when my grandmother died of breast cancer in the late 1970s.

Technology and treatment have come a long way since then, and there are more women and men, yes, men surviving and living through breast cancer.  Which brings me to the question to ask, “Have you had your mammogram this year?”

Since breast cancer runs in my family, I encourage you to get a mammogram on a regular basis.  I go every year.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, “It is estimated that about 1 in 8 Canadian women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime and 1 in 34 will die from it.”

People and their causes come first.
Honesty, kindness, and respect always.
Integrity, no matter what.”

These are the core values upon which Pounce Support Servicesä was built and continues to emphasize in all the work being produced on a daily. For Founder Kat Mooney and her team, making a difference in the lives of the people they work with and in local communities as a whole is not just a bonus of their work; it is their ultimate goal.

It was the unyielding commitment to these values, the company’s vision (“Communities working together for the greater good.”), and the genuine dedication to philanthropy and advocacy that initially caught my attention when looking for for a spot to complete my practicum during my final semester at MacEwan University. Unsurprisingly, this led to Pounce Support Servicesä securing the top spot on the list of dream placements for this budding Public Relations practitioner. A dream that ultimately came true, and six months and an official promotion from Cub to Cat lacontinuenues to exceed all of my expectations!

I have learned so much from Kat and the rest of the Cool Cats, and I am honoured to have received the opportunity to be part of a team that consistently goes the extra mile to empower and uplift all of their clients through a truly unbreakable dedication to thinking outside the “cage.”
